Company History: In 1835 the printer Carl Bertelsmann founds a small publishing house in Gütersloh, Germany. Included in his program are children’s and youth books. During the 1950s a reorientation within the Verlagsgruppe Bertelsmann takes place. In 1968 the publishing house C. Bertelsmann Jugendbuchverlag is created within Verlagsgruppe Bertelsmann. In 2001 the publishing houses of the Bertelsmann group reform under the name Verlagsgruppe Random House. Three years later the children’s and youth publishing house of Verlagsgruppe Random House now has the name cbj (formerly C. Bertelsmann Jugendbuchverlag). In 2008 the children’s and youth programs are reorganized into two separate hardcover publishing houses – cbj and cbt – each with its own paperback program.
